What is Solar PPA?

A Solar PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a solar program designed to help homeowners switch to solar without the large upfront investment traditionally associated with system ownership.

Instead of purchasing the equipment itself, homeowners pay for the energy the system produces through predictable monthly payments designed around the property's current usage, future energy needs, and long-term efficiency goals.

This structure helps many homeowners create more stable long-term energy costs while reducing dependence on rising utility rates.

Installation, engineering, permitting, monitoring, and maintenance are included throughout the agreement, helping eliminate large upfront costs and long-term system responsibility.

Solar payments do not begin until the system has already been producing power for approximately one month.

When required for the project, qualifying improvements such as roofing, electrical upgrades, or tree removal may be included based on engineering and installation requirements.

  • No installation cost
  • Lower and predictable energy rates
  • Long-term system monitoring & maintenance included
  • Potential qualifying property upgrades
  • Personalized system design based on your home's energy usage and goals

Savings in practice

15% to 30%

Typical Initial Savings Range

Up to 40% in some customer profiles.

Your monthly payment and projected savings are based on the property's energy usage, system size, and estimated production. During the assessment, we evaluate your current electric usage, future energy needs, and overall property profile to help establish a fixed monthly amount with projected savings that typically begin between 15% and 30%, with some customer profiles reaching higher savings.

Because the program is built around stable long-term energy pricing, many homeowners increase their overall savings over time as traditional utility rates continue to rise.

Payments are tied to the system's energy production, so billing begins only after the system has been producing power for approximately one month following PTO approval.

Qualifying Project Improvements

When necessary for installation, safety, or long-term system performance, certain property improvements may qualify as part of the solar project.

  • Roof replacement or roofing repairs
  • Structural reinforcement or rafter repairs
  • Electrical service or panel upgrades
  • Tree removal or shading reduction
  • Additional property improvements evaluated case by case

Important: All qualifying improvements are determined through engineering review and project requirements.

How the Process Works

  1. 1

    Consultation & Energy Assessment

We review your electric usage, future energy needs, and long term goals to prepare a personalized solar proposal with projected savings and more predictable energy costs.

  2. 2

    Site Evaluation

A site visit is completed to verify roof condition, electrical infrastructure, trees, and any project-related improvement requirements before documentation is submitted for engineering review.

  3. 3

    Engineering & Approvals

Once approved, the project moves into engineering, permitting, utility applications, and installation planning.

  4. 4

    Installation & Project Execution

Professional crews complete the installation, inspections, scheduling, and overall project management from start to finish.

  5. 5

    System Activation & Savings

Once the system is activated and producing energy, homeowners can begin tracking production, savings, and long-term energy performance.

Typical Timelines

Most projects are completed within approximately one to three months, depending on engineering requirements, permitting timelines, utility processing, and municipality approval schedules.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum credit score of 650
  • Proof of homeownership
  • Properties located within New England
  • Some condominiums and municipal utility areas may have restrictions

Municipality Utility Areas

Most Massachusetts homeowners receive electricity through National Grid, Eversource, or Unitil service territories, where Solar PPA programs are commonly available.

Some municipalities operate their own local electric utilities with separate energy programs and lower municipal rates, which may limit or restrict Solar PPA eligibility.

Municipal utility areas that commonly do not qualify may include Chicopee, Holyoke, Peabody, Taunton, Wakefield, Wellesley, Westfield, Hudson, Norwood, Concord, Littleton, Ashburnham, Templeton, and Groton.

Our team reviews each property individually to confirm utility eligibility and available solar program options.

Mass Save & Home Electrification Programs

In addition to Solar PPA, many homeowners across Massachusetts may also qualify for energy-efficiency and electrification programs through Mass Save and TURNKEY initiatives.

Depending on the property, qualifying homeowners may receive 70% up to 100% coverage on certain insulation, weatherization, and energy-efficiency improvements through available Mass Save programs.

These programs may include insulation, air sealing, weatherization, door and window improvements, and other upgrades designed to improve comfort, reduce energy loss, and increase overall home efficiency.

For qualifying homeowners currently using oil heating systems, TURNKEY electrification programs may also help support the transition from oil heating to high-efficiency electric heat pump systems and other home electrification upgrades.

Everything Homeowners Ask About Solar PPA & Mass Save® (FAQ)

Is Solar worth it?
With Solar PPA, the incentives are already built into the program, savings are locked in from day one, and the system is backed by long-term 25-year coverage. For many homeowners, it has become the smarter and more practical way to go solar.
Will I pay two electric bills at the same time?
No. When the system is properly designed around your home's current electric usage, future energy needs, and long-term goals, it is built to offset 100% or more of the property's projected energy consumption. The goal is to replace your current utility costs with a lower and more predictable solar payment, not create two full electric bills.
Do I pay anything before the system starts producing power?
No. Solar payments do not begin immediately after installation. Billing only starts after the system has been activated, and producing energy for approximately one month.
How long is the Solar PPA agreement?
Most Solar PPA agreements are structured around a standard 25-year term, designed to provide long-term energy stability, monitoring, maintenance, and predictable pricing.
Can I still own the system later if I want to?
Yes. Solar PPA agreements may include buyout options later in the term or earlier if ownership becomes the better fit. Until then, homeowners benefit from lower energy costs without taking on large debt or upfront expenses.
What happens if I sell my home?
Solar PPA agreements are transferable in most cases. The next homeowner can continue the agreement and benefit from the lower projected energy costs already attached to the property.
Do I still benefit from federal solar incentives?
Yes. While homeowners may no longer claim certain tax credits directly, Solar PPA programs are structured so those incentives are still applied within the project, helping reduce the overall cost structure.
Does this affect my credit or place a lien on my property?
No. Solar PPA is not structured like a traditional solar loan, which means there is no loan balance reported as personal debt and no lien placed on the property through the agreement structure.
What credit score is generally required?
Most programs typically look for credit profiles around 650+, although approvals can vary depending on the overall customer and property profile.
What about cloudy days, snow, or winter?
Solar systems in New England are designed using local weather data, seasonal production estimates, and annual energy trends. Production may vary throughout the year, but systems are designed around long-term yearly performance.
What warranty is provided for roof work?
When roofing work is included as part of the project, workmanship coverage may include roof-related warranties of up to 10 years, depending on the scope of work and installation structure.
What happens if the system stops working?
The system includes long-term production coverage, monitoring, warranty protection, and maintenance support throughout the agreement. If repairs or service are needed, they are handled through the project coverage structure.
Will my homeowner's insurance increase?
No. Homeowners generally do not experience insurance increases because the system is not treated the same way as directly owned solar equipment.
Is the process slow or bureaucratic?
Timelines vary depending on the city, utility provider, engineering approvals, and permitting process. Many projects are completed within approximately one to three months, while some municipalities may take longer. Every home is different, but the goal remains the same: creating lower, more stable energy costs compared to rising utility rates over time.
